Important Information for Your Visit to Canda Island

We want your stay at Canda Island to be enjoyable and hassle-free. Please review the following details to help you plan your trip.

Accommodation

  • Each house accommodates up to 8 people.
  • Houses are equipped with fridges and/or freezers (see the Casa page for details).
  • Kitchens include gas stoves and gas geysers (gas is provided).
  • Fire extinguishers are available in all houses.
  • Cutlery, crockery, cooking utensils, and pots are provided.
  • Please bring your own bathing and swimming towels.

Water & Utilities

  • Tap water is not safe for drinking – bring your own drinking water.
  • If your house does not have permanent electricity, generators run at the following times:
  • 06:00 – 08:00 | 11:00 – 12:00 | 17:00 – 23:00
    (pre-arranged and approved by the Company Committee before arrival).

Communication

  • WiFi is available at the office.
  • There is no Vodacom or Mcel reception on the island.
  • Movitel SIM cards and airtime can be purchased in Xai Xai (passport required for SIM registration).

Boating & Fishing

  • Boats must be parked in the designated beach area.
  • Fishing licenses and boat launching permits are available at the office.
  • Boats cannot be launched without the required permits.

Payments & Currency

  • All payments (e.g., fishing licenses, launching permits) must be made in Meticais.
  • Credit cards are accepted, and Rands cannot be used.
  • Exchange money before reaching the Mozambique border.

Travel Essentials

  • Third-party vehicle insurance is mandatory and must be arranged before entering Mozambique.
  • Bring household essentials, including:
  • Toilet paper (1-ply only), black bags, dishwashing liquid, washing powder, and insect repellent (Canda is a high-risk malaria area).
  • A suggested shopping list is available to help with planning, as supplies on the island are limited.

Shopping & Supplies

  • Local vendors along the route sell seasonal fruits, vegetables, and nuts – please support them where possible.
  • The nearest shop for beer, soft drinks, and basic supplies is in Canda Town (a 20-minute drive).
  • Chidenguele (45 km) and Quissico (50 km) have more options, but travel takes around 1.5 hours.
  • Xai Xai (100 km from Canda, approximately a 2-hour drive) has markets, a bakery, a pharmacy, and a supermarket (Falcons Supermarket, look for the large bull on the roof).
  • For last-minute items, Aldo’s garage (30 km before the Canda turnoff) is a convenient stop.
